September 11 BUZZ

Happy Monday!

As we move into our first full week, we want to recognize the amazing citizenship our students are exhibiting. In classrooms, hallways, and on the playground, we see students showing kindness, being helpful, demonstrating responsibility, and showing respect to others and our building. We look forward to "catching students in the act" of being good citizens.

Please read through the following blog post articles for important Glen Allan information.

It's a great week for a great week!

Complete your Student Correction and Verification Form by September 22

As the 2023-24 school year gets underway, it’s important the school and Division have correct information on file in the student record. All families are required to complete a Correction and Verification Form for each student by Sept. 22, 2023.

Access this form through the PowerSchool Parent Portal by clicking the Correction and Verification Form tab in the left-hand menu. Review and submit updates for each child linked in your account, as needed. Please review all information, paying particular attention to phone numbers and email addresses as well as the emergency contacts on file. If you’ve recently moved, this is also where you’ll update your address information.

Filling out the form is easy and takes only a few minutes to complete. Simply, review the form and each of its sections, make revisions where required, and then select “Submit” for school office staff to review. Even if you don’t have any changes to make, when you “Submit,” the Division has a record that you’ve reviewed the data, and we know we still have the most up-to-date information on file for your child.

If you have questions about the form or are having trouble with your Parent Portal account, contact the Glen Allan Office at 780-467-5519.

OPPORTUNITY

Parent Information Evening - Cyberworld Presentation

On Thursday, September 28, Glen Allan is hosting a presentation for parents and caregivers on practicing Internet safety with children and youth and on responding to technology-facilitated sexual violence.

This two-hour presentation from Saffron begins at 5:30 p.m.. We will be exploring strategies to promote safe Internet usage by children and youth. Covering a variety of topics from social media to gaming and chatrooms to live streaming, we will discuss ways to promote boundary-setting and options to protect privacy online. The presentation includes a discussion on pornography and the sexually explicit content that youths may be exposed to, focusing primarily on the effects this has on their developing brains and relationships, as well as on strategies for navigating these difficult conversations. We will also discuss sexting and review the Criminal Code. The presentation includes content on relevant trends in technology-facilitated sexual violence – such as sextortion, grooming, luring, and child sexual abuse material. The goal is to encourage parents and caregivers to feel equipped to both prevent and respond to these issues by identifying the warning signs, creating a dialogue with youths, and recognizing the resources available to support them.

Save-the-Date - Glen Allan School Council Meeting

Our first Glen Allan School Council meeting is coming up next week. All parents and caregivers are welcome to attend on September 21 at 6:30 pm. The meeting will be held in the library and there will be a Microsoft Teams link available for those who are unable to join in person.

The meeting agenda and meeting link will be posted on our website early next week.

The Glen Allan School Council is a wonderful way to be involved in your child's school community. Parents play an important role in student success. School councils allow parents to participate in decisions that impact student learning. By contributing knowledge, perspective, and ideas at school council meetings, parents are actively contributing to the success of the school community.

INFORMATION

Evacuation Drill - Wednesday, September 13

In our ongoing efforts to keep you informed, we want to let you know that students and staff will participate in an evacuation drill on Wednesday. Students and staff will practice how to exit the school in a calm and orderly manner. As we've seen in years past, we know students will be respectful in their actions and will follow correct protocol under the direction of staff members.

An evacuation is used when it is unsafe to remain inside the building. In an evacuation, students and staff exit the building and gather at a designated location outside the school. In the event students and staff must remain outside for an extended period of time, they may move to our alternate indoor evacuation centre. For more information about Elk Island Public Schools’ emergency preparedness planning, visit https://www.eips.ca/parents/emergency-preparedness.

With safety as a top priority, we will continue to review emergency preparedness procedures with our staff and students. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you for your ongoing support.
