December 11 BUZZ

Thanks you Indigo Sherwood Park for your staff's favourite picks!

Happy Monday!

Please remember to call or email to report student absences. This is particularly important during cold and flu season where there are a greater number of absences to track. Our goal is to ensure attendance is taken and verified first thing in the morning. When absences aren't reported we need to call to follow up with families to ensure students are home safe. Thank you for your continued support.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to Indigo Sherwood Park for gifting us with their staff's favourite books! This collection of books has already been added to our library circulation and we know our students are going to love them!

It's a great week for a great week!

Please read through the following blog post articles for important Glen Allan information.

Winter Showcase Tickets & Best Seats in the House Reminder

Tickets and an information sheet for Glen Allan's Winter Showcases will be sent home with students this week.

Due to fire regulations that dictate the gym's capacity, we will be holding 4 separate showcases. Four tickets will be provided for each family, for each show that your child(ren) are performing in.

If you do not need all 4 tickets, please send the extras back to school. (If you have a child performing in one showcase but they have a sibling in another showcase, you will need to use one of your four tickets for the child who isn't performing, as they'll have to stay with you in the gym when they aren't performing).

Best Seats in the House Raffle Reminder

The GASC Playground Fundraising Team are Raffling off Front-Row seats for the Winter Showcase performances. The "Best Seats in the House" is totally optional, and the money will be divided between the school's new Playground Fund and the Strathcona Food Bank.

Tickets are $2 each and can be purchased by completing the Best Seats in the House form and returning it to the school with your payment (cash only please). Please indicate the number of raffle tickets you would like.

All ticket orders and money must be in school by Friday December 15th. Draw will take place on December 18th.

Each winner will receive 4 front row tickets. Winners will be contacted via phone.

Still in need of Volunteers with Trucks

We will be borrowing some chairs from Wes Hosford School to be used at our Winter Showcase. We are hoping to have some volunteers with trucks to help us transport about 100 chairs on Monday, December 18th at 9am and again on Thursday, December 21st at 9am.

If you are able to help us with this big task, please email Chrissy.Appleby@eips.ca and indicate which date(s) you are able to help!

Hot Lunch December 21

On Thursday, December 21, GASC will be hosting hot lunch from Nitza's Pizza. The Kindergarten class will have their hot lunch on Wednesday, December 20.

Log on to gln.hotlunches.net to order. The Access Code is GLEN if anyone has not yet set up their account this year. Orders will open close Monday, December 11, and will close on Monday, December 18. All orders must be paid through the website. Carted but unpaid items, as of the cut-off time, will not be ordered. We are unable to accept late orders.

We are looking for volunteers to come help the day of. You can sign up to volunteer on the website at the time of purchase. If you run into any problems, please contact Drie @ amsuelzle@gmail.com or reply to this email.

Reporting attendance reminder

Please remember to call or email to report student absences. This is particularly important during cold and flu season where there are a greater number of absences to track. Our goal is to ensure attendance is taken and verified first thing in the morning. When absences aren't reported we need to call to follow up with families to ensure students are home safe.

You can report your child's absence by phone or email:

  • Call (780) 467-5519
  • Email our school office

Please include your student's name, the name of the parent/guardian reporting the absence, the duration of the absence, and the reason for the absence(ex: symptoms, vacation, etc).

We are responsible to Alberta Health Services to track illnesses within the school community, therefore the more specifics you can share related to the reason for a students' absence, the more accurate we can be in our tracking. If a reason is not included in your email or phone message, Mrs. Camp or Mrs. Delainey are required to follow up on the reason.

INFORMATION

Kindergarten Registration Starts Soon!

Is your child turning five on or before Dec. 31, 2024? If so, it’s almost time to register for kindergarten.

Kindergarten registration opens for the 2024-25 school year on Feb. 1, 2024.

To help families prepare, Elk Island Public Schools has put together an online EIPS Kindergarten Tool kit to make the transition as smooth as possible. The kit includes information on registration, important dates, programming options, what to expect, eligibility, how to find your designated school, transportation and more.

Additional information regarding Glen Allan Elementary's kindergarten program is available at https://www.glenallanelementary.ca/parent-info/kindergarten

Returning Student Registration: 2024-25

Mark your calendars! Returning student registration for the 2024-25 school year will take place Feb. 8-21, 2024.

Families of all current students—with the exception of graduating Grade 12 students—must complete the process to confirm the school their child plans to attend in the 2024-25 school year or advise the Division of their plans not to return to EIPS. Additionally, students who want to attend a non-designated school need to make that request through the returning student registration process—acceptance is based on available space. Watch for more details in the new year.

2024-25 Fee Consultation Process

Under Alberta Education’s School Fee Regulation, schools must consult with parents prior to setting school fees for the upcoming school year.

Our next school council meeting will be taking place on January 18, 2024 at 6:30 p.m. During that time, we’ll be sharing information about our current fee structure, posing specific questions about priorities, and asking you to provide your feedback as we plan for the next school year. While many of these activities and services enhance students’ educational experience, we want to ensure these fees aren’t cost prohibitive for families.

Specifically, we will be asking for input on the following:

  • Noon hour supervision
  • Field trips and associated fees
  • Extracurricular activities
  • Non-curricular goods and services (for example, student union and yearbooks)

We understand not all families will be available to attend the meeting but it’s still important we get as much input from the school community as possible. Following the meeting, materials will be shared on our website for your review, and an email address provided so you can submit a written response.

School administration will use feedback provided to help determine fees for next year, which will then be shared at the February school council meeting, posted to our website and shared via link through email.

I look forward to hearing from you on January 18.
