September 18 BUZZ

Happy Monday!

We have a full week this week: hot lunch Tuesday, Picture Day and a Division 1 assembly on Wednesday, Glen Allan School Council Meeting Thursday, and Terry Fox assembly and Fun Run on Friday!

It's a great week for a great week!

It was wonderful to spot so many dots on Friday. Students and staff dressed in clothes with dots, spots, circles, to encourage everyone to "just make a MARK and see where it takes you!" Check out the photo gallery below to see all the creative dots that marked our school.

To learn a little more about the origins of "The Dot" from Peter H Reynolds, check out the video below.

ACTION

Picture Day!

Our Picture Day at Glen Allan Elementary is this week! Wednesday, September 20th* is Picture Day for all students.

*This is a change from the original date of Friday, September 22nd.

Glen Allan School Council Meeting

Our first Glen Allan School Council meeting is this week. All parents and caregivers are welcome to attend on September 21 at 6:30 pm. The meeting will be held in the library and there will be a Microsoft Teams link available for those who are unable to join in person.

The meeting agenda and meeting link is posted here.

The Glen Allan School Council is a wonderful way to be involved in your child's school community. Parents play an important role in student success. School councils allow parents to participate in decisions that impact student learning. By contributing knowledge, perspective, and ideas at school council meetings, parents are actively contributing to the success of the school community.

Terry Fox Run - Friday, September 22

Toonies for Terry will be collected Monday - Friday. Students can bring toonies to school to donate to the Terry Fox Foundation. Toonies will be collected by the classroom teachers.

The Terry Fox School Run will happen on Friday September 22 at 2:00 pm. After a brief assembly the whole school will gather outside Be Like Terry, and run our Terry Fox loop in the back field. Parents, caregivers, and community members are welcome to join our school community for the Terry Fox Fun Run outside!

Update your PowerSchool information

The EIPS Correction and Verification Form is available online through your PowerSchool Parent Portal. Use the form to access and update your child’s records information—including address, parent and guardian information, emergency contacts and medical information. Reviewing the form and submitting updates ensures the school has the most up-to-date information regarding your child.

When reviewing the form, pay close attention to all listed phone numbers, email addresses and emergency contact information. Also, if you recently moved, now is the time to ensure the Division has your updated address. Throughout the year, the Division and school uses the listed information to communicate with families about important information, including updates, the latest news and events.

EIPS Correction and Verification Form

Review and update the form by Sept. 22, 2023.

For more information about the PowerSchool Correction and Verification Form, contact the school office at 780-467-5519.

OPPORTUNITY

Parent Information Evening - Cyberworld Presentation

On Thursday, September 28, Glen Allan is hosting a presentation for parents and caregivers on practicing Internet safety with children and youth and on responding to technology-facilitated sexual violence.

This two-hour presentation from Saffron begins at 5:30 p.m.. We will be exploring strategies to promote safe Internet usage by children and youth. Covering a variety of topics from social media to gaming and chatrooms to live streaming, we will discuss ways to promote boundary-setting and options to protect privacy online. The presentation includes a discussion on pornography and the sexually explicit content that youths may be exposed to, focusing primarily on the effects this has on their developing brains and relationships, as well as on strategies for navigating these difficult conversations. We will also discuss sexting and review the Criminal Code. The presentation includes content on relevant trends in technology-facilitated sexual violence – such as sextortion, grooming, luring, and child sexual abuse material. The goal is to encourage parents and caregivers to feel equipped to both prevent and respond to these issues by identifying the warning signs, creating a dialogue with youths, and recognizing the resources available to support them.

INFORMATION

Evacuation Drill - Monday, September 18

In our ongoing efforts to keep you informed, we want to let you know that students and staff will participate in an evacuation drill on Monday afternoon. Students and staff will practice how to exit the school in a calm and orderly manner. As we've seen in years past, we know students will be respectful in their actions and will follow correct protocol under the direction of staff members.

An evacuation is used when it is unsafe to remain inside the building. In an evacuation, students and staff exit the building and gather at a designated location outside the school. In the event students and staff must remain outside for an extended period of time, they may move to our alternate indoor evacuation centre. For more information about Elk Island Public Schools’ emergency preparedness planning, visit https://www.eips.ca/parents/emergency-preparedness.

With safety as a top priority, we will continue to review emergency preparedness procedures with our staff and students. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you for your ongoing support.

Opportunity for Smudging

Our Self-Identified students have had their first of many opportunities to connect with Leaha Atcheynum, one of our EIPS First Nations, Metis, and Inuit Education Advisor. During these optional gatherings, Self-Identified students are given an opportunity to smudge, and learn from Leaha's teachings on a variety of topics. Leaha will next meet with our Self-Identified students on Monday, October 9th at 11:30am for about 30 minutes.
