September 19 BUZZ

3-2 / 4-1 and 4-2 Celebrate Dot Day

Happy Friday, Glen Allan Families!

What an incredible week we had together! We started Monday with Dot Day, inspired by Peter H. Reynolds’ The Dot. Just like the book encourages, “Just make a mark and see where it takes you,” we hope our students feel inspired to explore their creativity and discover the amazing things they can do.

On Thursday, September 18, we were honored to welcome Fred Fox, Terry Fox’s brother, to speak with our school community on behalf of the Terry Fox Foundation. His message reminded us all of the power of perseverance and hope. Next week, we will participate in our school wide Terry Fox run. Over 20 years Glen Allan has raised over $20 000 for cancer research, and on Wednesday and Thursday, we will be collecting donations for the Terry Fox Foundation — see details under Action Items below.

ACTION

Terry Fox School Run

The 2025 Terry Fox School Run is set for this month, and we are so excited to be taking part! Our event will be taking place on Thursday, September 25 at 1:30 pm.

This event not only supports important cancer research but also helps build a strong sense of school spirit for our students. Glen Allan will be collecting monetary donations on Wednesday, September 24 and Thursday, September 25, with all proceeds going directly to the Terry Fox Foundation. Students with donations can give the money directly to their teachers.

We are very excited to be a part of this year’s Terry Fox event.  This is our opportunity to go the distance for this year’s event “Finish It” together.  Please join us to support cancer research while building incredible school spirit for all our students and staff.  Thank you in advance for your support!

Lunches and Snacks

To help keep students energized and ready to learn, we kindly ask that families pack a full lunch with enough food to last the day. While we do our best to support students, the school is not able to provide extra snacks. Thank you for your help in ensuring your child has what they need for a successful day at school.

INFORMATION

BE PAWS - Positive Referral Program

At Glen Allan students and staff have been focusing on our  School Education Plan goal of "connection, relationships and engaging in positive interactions." We are continuing to implement our BE PAWS: character traits that students and staff identified as foundational for respectful interactions and active citizenship expected from Glen Allan students and staff.

The four BE PAWS are:

  • BE Kind
  • BE Respectful
  • BE Responsible
  • BE Helpful

We encourage each student to embody those character traits with the overarching message being BE YOU!

When students are "caught" demonstrating the BE PAWS, they can be recognized with a PAWS-itive referral. Along with the written certificate, students are entered into a draw for a pizza lunch, and have their photo taken to be displayed for the month. It's been wonderful to celebrate all the kind, helpful, responsible, and respectful students at our school!

Clubs with Mental Health Capacity Leader

Asma, our Mental Health Capacity Builder is starting some amazing clubs, we are excited! These are announced at school so students are aware, and all clubs are on a drop-in basis!

First Nations, Metis and Inuit Learning

Orange Shirt Day

Orange Shirt Day is being recognized at Glen Allan on Monday, September 29. It is a day for remembrance and is an act of reconciliation. Students will be learning that this is not a celebratory or joyous occasion, but rather one where we focus on empathy and understanding. Some of the activities that we will be doing during the week are:

  • orange shirt designs
  • written reflections
  • read alouds of age-appropriate books

If you wish to purchase an Orange Shirt, there are many indigenous owned businesses with meaningful contributions in the Treaty 6 area. One supplier for shirts is the U of A bookstore; the design is created by local Cree artist Jerry Whitehead and the proceeds go back to intergenerational residential school survivors.

The Orange Shirt Society also sells t-shirts and other merchandise.

We encourage you to have conversations with your child(ren) about the meaning behind National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, wearing Orange Shirts, and how to respond to the Calls to Action.
