May 12 BUZZ

Glenda is a mom!

Happy Friday!

We hope everyone has a Happy Mother's Day celebrating the amazing women who nurture and love! This day is a celebration of all the women who have played a vital role in our lives, from our biological mothers to the women who have guided and supported us. We appreciate and love all the mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, and all others who have shaped our lives with their support and love.

It's a great week for a great week!

Hot Lunch

Glen Allan School Council (GASC) will be hosting Hot Lunch from Nitza’s Pizza on Friday, May 16. Orders are open NOW, and close on Monday, May 12 at 6:00 P.M.

To order, please visit gln.hotlunches.net/

If you have not ordered lunch previously, please use the access code “GLEN” to create an account and be sure you select the right class for each of your children.

If your child is absent on a hot lunch day and you’ve placed an order, please call the school office before 11:00 a.m. and let us know if you want to pick it up, send it home with a sibling/someone else, or donate it. If we do not hear from you, hot lunches will be donated.

No refunds are issued for hot lunches after the ordering cut-off date.

**KINDERGARTEN PARENTS**, please make sure your child is scheduled to be in class on the hot lunch day. Hot lunch for KA and KB will alternate monthly. If you accidentally order lunch for your child on a day that they are not scheduled to be in school, please email the hot lunch coordinator to cancel your order.

May Hot Lunch is scheduled for Kindergarten Class: KB

(We do not offer hot lunch to the in-school daycare program.)

**IMPORTANT**

If your child chooses not to participate on hot lunch days, please send them with a regular lunch. The office has been overwhelmed with lunches being dropped off by both external delivery services and family members. Thank you for supporting the regular operations of the school office.

For any questions about the Hot Lunch ordering system, please contact our volunteer Hot Lunch Coordinator, Drie Suelzle, at asuelzle@hotmail.com. The school office is unable to help with the hot lunch ordering system. It is entirely run by GASC volunteers.

Thank you for understanding and for supporting our Hot Lunch School Fundraising Program.

INFORMATION

Educational Assistant Appreciation Day is May 14!

On May 14, we recognize the dedication, hard work and compassion of educational assistants in our school community and across Elk Island Public Schools. Educational assistants play an integral role in education, from one-on-one student support to larger classroom dynamics. Thank you to all our educational assistants—you make a difference in the lives of students every day, and we are so grateful to have each one of you in our school.

This Educational Assistant Appreciation Day and beyond, we encourage students, families and staff to take a moment to tell an educational assistant how they’ve impacted you and to share your appreciation with them.

Regulation Strategy - Humming

Here at Glen Allan we are aimed at enhancing capacity to nurture emotional resilience and well-being among students. We are actively involved in collaborating with our staff to introduce effective regulation strategies and deepen understandings of brain development. We continue to work on integrating these strategies into everyday classroom practices. This weeks strategy is Humming.

There are many ways you can incorporate humming as a break or begin class. Try humming to Simon Says or Name That Tune or move your arms and legs to someone’s humming. This activity releases stress and blockages in the brain stem.

First Nations, Metis and Inuit

  • This week our self-identified students made Bannock. We had a great time connecting as we measured the ingredients and enjoyed eating it even more.
  • Next week, we will be learning how to bead and make keychains.
  • The May First Nations, Metis and Inuit newsletter is now available. There are some great videos to watch and opportunities to connect literacy and culture.
  • Elk Island Public Schools is also excited to be hosting a very profound and powerful exhibit from the Canadian Museum for Human Rights called the Witness Blanket created by master carver Carey Newman. This art installation was created to recognize the atrocities of the residential school era, honour the children and symbolize ongoing reconciliation.
    • This exhibit will be housed at the Fort Heritage Precinct from May 22nd to June 26th. The exhibit will be open to the public on Saturday’s at a first come first serve basis.
