June 13 BUZZ

Happy Friday!

We hope all our Glen Allan fathers and father-figures have a wonderful Father's Day!

June seems to be flying by, we only have one more full week of school left!

Next Friday, in recognition of National Indigenous Peoples Day, we are having Lunch on the Land. We invite all families to come to the school to eat lunch with their children outside on the school grounds. Should the weather not cooperate, we will move the picnic indoors. While you are visiting the school, please have a look through our lost and found tables as there are a lot of unclaimed items.

Have an amazing weekend!

FIRST NATIONS, MÉTIS, AND INUIT INFORMATION

For generations, many Indigenous groups and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on June 21 or around that time of year because of the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year.

National Aboriginal Day, now National Indigenous Peoples Day, was announced in 1996 by then Governor General of Canada, Roméo LeBlanc, through the Proclamation Declaring June 21 of Each Year as National Aboriginal Day. This was the result of consultations and statements of support for such a day made by various Indigenous groups:

  • in 1982, the National Indian Brotherhood, now the Assembly of First Nations, called for the creation of National Aboriginal Solidarity Day
  • in 1995, the Sacred Assembly, a national conference of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people chaired by Elijah Harper, called for a national holiday to celebrate the contributions of Indigenous Peoples
  • also in 1995, the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples recommended the designation of a National First Peoples Day

All lost and found items are now on display near the front office. Teachers will be bringing students to look over the items and collect lost things several times before the year ends. We invite families to drop by and take a look through the items as well. You are welcome to pop into the building at any time - there are a lot of items!

At the end of the school year, we will bag up all of the items in good condition for donation. Come and find your things before the last day as they will be gone the following day!

Regulation Strategy - The Ride

Here at Glen Allan we are aimed at enhancing capacity to nurture emotional resilience and well-being among students. We are actively involved in collaborating with our staff to introduce effective regulation strategies and deepen understandings of brain development. We continue to work on integrating these strategies into everyday classroom practices. This weeks strategy is The Ride.

As we stand with our feet apart, we raise our arms like goalposts on a football field, and very slowly, we move from side to side. With every breath, we move a little faster and we can even try and close our eyes feeling the movement, rhythm, and the air around us! This energizes
the nervous system!
