The Buzz-November 16, 2020

Good Afternoon Glen Allan families,

I hope you had a wonderful Fall Break! Welcome back to students and staff with a special welcome to our 18 students transitioning back to in-school-learning!

November 16 – 20 is Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week. Because it coincides with Métis Week, our school focus will be on empathy, understanding and cultural pride. Please join us in celebrating Rock Your Moccs Days on Tuesday, November 17 and Wednesday, November 18. People from coast to coast are rocking their moccasins (or favorite slippers/shoes) at school, at the office, and in their communities to promote cultural pride.

The Métis decorated their clothing with fancy beadwork and floral patterns. They were so talented, in fact, that they became known as the ‘Flower Beadwork People’. The floral beadwork became an important part of Métis culture, and was used on moccasins.

Our Indigenous teacher, Jeremy Albert will be joining us as we Rock our Moccs. He will be meeting with each of our classes individually and sharing his wisdom. Glen Allan staff and students are encouraged to wear their moccasins or favorite shoes/slippers to participate on Tuesday and Wednesday this week!

Jumping off this idea we will work on our empathy skills by offering lessons on the theme of Walking in my Shoes.  Teachers have a variety of activities planned to foster empathy, understanding for others and cultural pride. Our wonderful librarian, Ms. Gauchier will highlight books that align with our theme and I know the students will enjoy her read aloud choices! Morning announcements and bulletin displays will promote our them for Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week as well.

Library Opening for Students

Ms. Gauchier has been doing a fabulous job visiting classrooms and making books accessible through her delivery service to homerooms but we are very excited to announce that we are opening the library this week! Ms. Gauchier and Mrs. Vicic have made a special video outlining the safety procedures and protocols necessary to keep our students safe! Take a moment to watch!

Art Card Orders

Please remember to return your Art Card orders which are due tomorrow! A huge thank you to GASC for coordinating this fundraiser. The cards are absolutely beautiful!

Working From Home

Unfortunately, I must inform you that I will be working from home until November 27 based on being identified as a close contact. I will continue to be available through email or you can call the school as I will frequently check for messages. In the meantime, Mrs. Vicic and I will continue to collaborate and connect on matters as they arise.

Thank you for your understanding, patience and ongoing support.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.

Kind Regards,

Judy Anderson

Principal
